Our First Spring Beauty

Our patient of the month for March is Teneia! After coming to the decision to have a breast augmentation, Teneia did her research and came to Dr. Walden for it. She wanted a natural look and she looks and feels great! She is so happy with her results, she spoke with LXNY about why she wanted to have the procedure done (video below). Teneia talks about the right reason to have plastic surgery done: she did it for herself. She is a confident and beautiful young woman and we are so happy to have been part of her experience. See what she had to say about it...enjoy!

What's Real and What's Silver?

Singing, dancing and acting may not be her thing....so why did 4.7 million fans (including my coworkers and I) tune in this August for the premiere of this season's Keeping Up With The Kardashians? Perhaps we want to see the sense of reality or normalcy that we don't get to see on the airbrushed and perfectly positioned pictures we compare ourselves to. It is the same reason why we buy gossip magazines...our little guilty treasures. We want to see cellulite and stretch marks and bad hair days! Be honest: it makes you feel better about yourself. This is especially true when we see celebrities having injections done and plastic surgeries. Celebrity news shows often enlist the help of Dr Walden to decide who has had what done so the public can see what plastic surgeons see.

Now, that said, the Kardashian show has as many fans as it does because we feel they are being real with us. Kourtney has had breast implants and she openly talks about it. So why does Kim deny having any breast-related surgeries and more importantly are we being cheated? In this W spread, everything seems to be out in the open and quite shiny and silver. To those who watch the show, we know that Kim turned down a nude shot for Playboy. So why did she then pose nude for W? Maybe it is because the silver paint is hiding signs of breast implants. To the untrained eye this might be true but take a closer look!  In the picture, the shading of the silver paint as it reflects off the flashes of the camera shows that Kim could be dealing with change in breast shape due to her implants. It's called capsular contracture and it occurs when excessive scar tissue forms around the implant and tightening occurs. Large, heavy implants placed in the subglandular position (instead of under the muscle of the breastbone) can more frequently end up looking tight and misshape the breast (causing tissue stretch and indentation in the skin). Could this be what we are seeing this on the inner aspect of the left breast more than the right in the W photo?

So, Kim, just tell us all! We promise to still like you and most of us will like you more if you come clean. We know that you were blessed with a derriere of extreme proportions. We know that it must have been hard being so un-proportioned and you wanted to be more balanced. We all want the same thing and we are some even have plastic surgeons to help us out. We are not born perfect...especially since we all have a different idea of what perfection is. The important thing is that we can be happy and we can get the look we want with a little help from our friends with steady hands and skills with the scalpel. What do you think?

Teresa Giudice Speaks Out About Her Breast Augmentation

Teresa Giudice, from Bravo’s hit series the Real Housewives of New Jersey, is known for being an outgoing, table flipping Italian princess. She also has been getting media attention for her onscreen footage of her Breast Augmentation procedure that she underwent.

The 37-year old told Steppin’ Out magazine that she is “much more confident with my body now,” was an A-cup, and “ after [she] breast fed, they looked different. [She] looked at them and went, Ewwwwww. They were deflated. [She] was just a big nipple.”

Giudice also said that she “never liked how [she] looked in bathing suits. [She] never wanted to put lingerie on.” And she feels that “you need boobs for lingerie.”

Having been married for nine years before the surgery, Giudice says that her husband did not care about her small breasts and he loved her the way she was, but that she got the procedure done for her, is happy and feels “so much sexier.”

And avid watchers of the show will know that the real gems of New Jersey are her spoiled, sassy, but adorably cute, four young daughters, Gia, 9, Gabriella, 5, Milania, 4, and Adriana, less than a year old. Giudice says that if her daughters want the procedure when they are older, she will fully support them.

Now that her procedure has settled she is showing off her new breast, in typical Teresa fashion: loud and proud.

LXNY Segment Boobs vs. No Boobs

LXNY produced a GREAT segment yesterday about the dilemma to get breast augmentation or not. This is always such a hot topic no matter what is going on in the media. As it would have it people like Kate Hudson and Heidi Montag gave these ladies PLENTY to discuss. In addition to experts from magazines like In Touch, was our own Teneia Wooten. Ms. Wooten is a recent patient of Dr. Walden who underwent breast augmentation. Teneia is such a excellent example of the kind of women that make up the majority of patients that undergo breast augmentation. I think with Hollywood stars like Heidi Montag and Pamela Anderson splashed all over the tabloids, we as a society associate breast augmentation with those type of results. To be honest woman like Teneia who have a natural and beautiful result are more the norm.

Many issues are discussed such as breast size, body dysmorphic disorder, and other self confidence issues. We all thought Teneia's answers were spot on! She also brings up a good point that breast augmentation is a big decision and a major surgery. It is incredibly important to always do your research and make sure you go to a board certified plastic surgeon when thinking of going under the knife. Especially when these days we have easy access the Internet which can be such a great research tool!

See below for the entire segment on LXNY! Enjoy!!

Two for One-- Liposuction and Fat Transfer to the Breasts for Augmentation? An Interview with Dr. Jennifer Walden

Does it sound to good to be true to increase your breast size and slim down your tummy or thighs at the same time? On Wednesday morning, Gretchen Carlson and Steve Doocey on cable TV’s top rated morning news show, Fox and Friends, interviewed me on the newest procedure in breast enhancement by fat transfer from other areas of the body. Possible interference with mammography and breast cancer are discussed as well as the technique used for this method used to enhance the female breast. I am Dr. Jennifer Walden, and serve as the program director of the Dept of Plastic Surgery at Manhattan, Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, and performs breast augmentation, lift, and reduction surgery in New York.

For years, saline and silicone implants have served as the most effective method for breast augmentation, and many studies and FDA approval declare both saline and silicone implants to be safe. Breast augmentation has been the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in recent years.

The relatively uncommon fat transfer breast augmentation procedure has women everywhere buzzing about the ‘benefits” of this seemingly more natural breast enhancement option. Present clinical evidence does not conclude that fat grafting is safer or better than saline or silicone implants, but the idea of taking one’s own fat and repositioning it to augment the breasts is rapidly capturing the attention of medicine, consumers, and the media.

Breast enhancement using fat grafts (lipoaugmentation) rather than silicone or saline implants employs fat suctioned from the patient’s buttocks, thighs or other fatty areas. This type of breast surgery can be used to increase the size of the breast or to fill in defects or abnormalities in existing breasts, including enhancing the appearance after breast reconstruction and softening the look of existing implants. Fat injections of the breasts may offer patients augmentation with a natural look and feel and the benefit of body contouring through liposuction—without the requirement for incisions or implants.

However, long-term safety and efficacy data as well as the effect of the procedure on breast cancer screening using mammography is still being evaluated in clinical studies. Concerns about fat grafting for breast enhancement include unpredictable or low survival rates of the transferred cells (which are frequently absorbed by the body), development of cysts, calcification and tissue scarring. Another major concern is long-term problems with breast cancer detection due to difficulties in telling the difference on mammograms between calcifications associated with breast cancer and calcifications associated with fat transfer.

This procedure does offer a modest opportunity for enhancement— specifically, about one cup size increase and the degree of enlargement will depend on the amount of spare fat that the patient has. But, numerous questions remain about this new technique: How much of the fat survives? Does the procedure have to be repeated? Are the breasts hard and uncomfortable for long periods after the procedure? And most importantly, what are the cancer implications of this technique? Research projects, funded by the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery are being conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of breast enhancement with fat.

In the meantime, plastic surgeons will continue to study the intricate details of the procedure for the safety of our patients– namely, the techniques of harvesting, preparation, and placement of the fat tissue, who should receive fat transfer, when it is appropriate, and whether it is safe for the long term. Results of clinical studies this far seem promising—so maybe going up a cup size with the benefit of a little liposuction elsewhere will be common practice at some point. Anyone reading this should be aware that this procedure is very technique dependent and to avoid complications it must to be done correctly by a properly trained, board-certified plastic surgeon. Methods for tissue harvest and tissue injection have been refined, as fat cells are carefully removed by a specialized liposuction procedure using numerous syringes and transferred to the breast via dozens of minutely small injections. This technique results in increased survival of the fat cells.

Autologous fat grafting is currently used for touching up reconstructed breasts which it is safe and effective for given that the breast tissue has already been removed and these patients are getting routine surveillance imaging. The procedure can also soften the appearance of existing implants and hide visible rippling which is particularly apparent in very thin women with a bony chest wall and little skin or fat with which to work. The amount of fat injected with these procedures is usually a lot less than that used in breast augmentation as well. So, the take home message here is the more long-term clinical trials involving multiple centers as well as radiologist and oncologists need to be done before a blanket endorsement of the procedure can be made. It also serves to mention that this would not be the method of choice for breast augmentation in women who have had or have a family history of breast cancer.

The Surgical Transformation of Our Favorite Southern Barbie

Dolly Parton (63) is a country icon and is also very well known for her numerous surgical procedures, and Ms. Parton has been very open about some of her procedures such as breast augmentation. There is little doubt she is world-reknowned for her awesome voice, that blonde hair, and voluminous bosom over the decades. She sings classic country songs such as Jolene, Islands in the Stream, Coat of Many Colors, and Two Doors Down. What a pleasure to see this native Tennessean win a Kennedy Center Honor in 2006. I do think she likely has gone down in size with her breast implants since her early days on Hee-Haw, and perhaps even had a breast lift, or mastopexy, to keep them so perky! It is also speculated that she may have had a brow lift which explains her arched brows and upper lid blepharoplasty (eye lift).
According to MakeMeHeal.com she may have also had rhinoplasty to narrow the width of her dorsum and reduce her nasal tip, and a chin augmentation to balance out her face. Her lips also appear a lot fuller than they did back in the 80's, resulting from possible fillers like Juvederm or Restylane. We love Dolly Parton in this office with the majority of us from south of the Mason-Dixon line, and we look forward to hearing her melodic tunes for years to come!

Jenny Loves Botox!

Funny gal and former playmate Jenny McCarthy (36) has openly admitted to using and loving Botox, the popular injectable for facial lines around the eyes and forehead. According to Make Me Heal news, Jenny has been quoted as saying "I love Botox, I absolutely love it...I get it minimally, so I can still move my face. But I really do think it’s a savior”. I think Jenny looks absolutely beautiful and by the look of her face she does Botox moderately and does not look overdone. She still has facial expression and her skin is smooth. She may also have had skin treatments like facials and peels.
Jenny is no stranger to plastic surgery as she is rumored to have had breast augmentation.

Most Popular Surgical Procedure in the US? BREAST AUGMENTATION

Reported by the American Society for Aestheic Plastic Surgery Association over 10.2 million plastic surgery procedures and non-surgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2008.” The Aesthetic Society, after collecting multi-specialty procedural statistics since 1997, says the overall number of cosmetic procedures has increased 162 percent since the collection of the statistics first began. The most frequently performed nonsurgical procedure was Botox injections and the most popular surgical procedure was breast augmentation.” According to this study, Breast Augmentation is the most performed surgical procedure for Women and Liposuction is the top cosmetic procedure for Men. The number one non-surgical procedure for both men and women are botox injections. This study calculated that over 53% of these cosmetic procedures were performed in Doctor's offices n 2008, 26% in freestanding surgery centers and 19% were performed in hospitals. "Americans spent just under $12 billion on cosmetic procedures; $7.2 billion was for surgical procedures, and $4.6 billion was for nonsurgical procedures."

Best Dressed:Fashion Week!

Whitney Port was amongst one of the best dressed women that has made an appearance at this year's Fashion Week. Whitney Port has appeared on The Hills and now has her own reality show called The City. We question of whether of not this 23-year old gem has had breast augmentation remains. As we know, if she has had implants, she would not be the first girl we've seen from The Hills to have gone under the knife (Spidey!). MakeMeHeal reported that Dr. John Di Saia said, “They look too small to be implanted.” And our very own Dr. Walden told MakeMeHeal, "“It doesn’t appear as though Whitney Port has had any sort of breast implant surgery as she appears to have a very natural look to her breasts with little upper pole fullness, and a bit of glandular ptosis, which just means they fall naturally.” It seems now as though there are only two girls from The Hills who have not gone under the knife to get breast augmentation: Whitney and Lauren. We look forward to seeing Whitney Port in her successful career in The City!

Grammy's Best Dressed and Best Augmentation?

American model Marisa Miller (30) graced the red carpet at the Grammy's with a short, cinched mini-dress. Marisa has appeared in Sports Illustrated and Victoria's Secret, and to say the least she has a body to die for! However, its been rumored that she has had a breast augmentation, breast lift and possible rhinoplasty (Source: Plasticopedia and Awful Plastic Surgery). The picture on the right shows Marissa laying down and what seems like the outline of implants. The picture on the left looks like she may have slight drooping and recent pictures of Marissa with a loose shirt taken at the same angle show her breasts as more perky and voluminous.

What Would Whitney Do?

On April 5, 2008, not only did many celebrities come out to support Muhammad Ali's Celebrity Fight Night XIV, but so did Whitney's new girls. In case you didn't know, Celebrity Fight Night is recognized as one of the nation's elite charity events and is a star-studded evening presented in honor of the featured guest, Muhammad Ali. Celebrities and professional athletes from all over the country participate in a night filled with incredible live auction items and musical performances by many of today's brightest stars. Whitney Houston was spotted in a beautiful red gown that was low cut, showing off her newest assets. It looks like she has had breast augmentation and looking at their somewhat unnatural, round appearance from the photos, perhaps placed over the muscle.

According to Makemeheal.com , Whitney’s breasts appear very "full and round" for a middle-aged woman, and are also a bit large for her small frame.
Somewhere between making her rather modest appearance in the 1980’s to the present, Whitney Houston appears to have upgraded with implants!

Lisa Rinna Confesses

Lisa Rinna has recently admitted to overdoing it a tad bit. This "Dancing with the Stars" alum has gained street cred from the media having confessed to not liking the outcome of a popular filler, Juvederm, after having it injected into her cheeks.  “My coming out and saying that I’d done too much in my cheeks — everybody came up to me and was really supportive and said, ‘good for you for being honest.’” Lisa told OK! “What happens is when you get older, you feel like you need it but you don’t really need it,” Lisa sighed.

Lisa along with many other stars are under constant scrutiny and pressure to compete with younger, beautiful starlets, so it's hard for them not to turn to cosmetic procedures (but those younger starlets will get older too.. just wait!).   She has likely had other work done as well such as a breast augmentation and Botox to help her with her fine lines. Most of all, whatever diet and exercise regimen she's on is working; her body is amazing!

Did Demi Moore Spend 3 Mil on Plastic Surgery?

Ms. Demi Moore (44) is rumored to have had 3 million dollars worth of surgery.  According to Make Me Heal, it is speculated that she has had various procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation, revisional breast augmentation and lift, a brow lift, collagen fillers, Botox, a chemical peel, and veneers.  Our take on the situation is that it would be difficult to spend $3 million on plastic surgery, even if you lived in a place where surgery fees are set a bit higher than other areas of the country like Manhattan or LA.  Surgery fees are set by surgeons and are usually based upon averages for a geographic region; given the spirit of economics and competition, not any one surgeon can charge an outrageously higher amount than what his or her competitors are charging for similar procedures using similar techniques; no one would go to him! Also, to spend $3 million on cosmetic surgery you would be having to get an operation almost every month, year after year after year...it's just not humanly possible.

Along with her cosmetic upkeep she is said to have a nutritionist, personal trainer, yoga instructor and kick-boxing champion. If you look at her pictures as a teen and young adult, her well- defined facial features have not changed much.

She is a good example how  a few  select cosmetic procedures and a healthy lifestyle can make you look younger and not like the cat lady!  She is very beautiful and whatever she decides to do for maintenance is definitely working for her.....she married Ashton Kutcher, a wild boy 16 years her junior!

Kathy Hilton knows how to keep a secret

Wife of Rick Hilton, partial heir to the Hilton hotel chain, and mother of famous daughters Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton, Kathy has had her fair share in the spotlight. This 49 year old hottie for a mommy looks great for her age but could it be all natural? Nothing wrong there, most women her age would die to look as good as she does!

Her face is smooth and lacking wrinkles indicating she could have had Botox injections as well as dermal fillers to fill in the creases. Who knows, she may have even had a face lift or blepharoplasty as well to give her the well-rested appearance that she has. Her appearance does not necessarily match her age and this could also just be due to good genes; Kudos to you Kathy!
This last photo was taken in the 90's and from the other more recent pictures taken of Kathy, a decade later, she seems to have a similar youthful appearance.

Happy early turkey day people!

Plastic Bunny

Traci Bingham is a former playboy bunny and Baywatch ‘actress’, who has also become a staple on the reality tv circuit. Baywatch, if you didn't already know, was that great show that consisted of beautiful women running around the sunny beaches of California saving people in skimpy red bathing suits. famousplastic.com states, "It’s easy to see why Traci has been unable to find steady acting work once Baywatch ended. After all of the plastic surgery she has had done, she looks like every other wannabe model in Los Angeles. Girls that look like that are a dime a dozen in Hollywood." (ouch!)

Although they didn't have the nicest things to say about this former playboy bunny, who are we to judge? Perhaps she has had a little too much filler injected into her lips, causing a swollen and unnatural look, as well as opting for implants too large for her body frame.. To each their own I suppose. That California look isn't for everyone, I guess.

At least her nose job looks modest and nicely done!! Have a good weekend everyone!

Toni Braxton is Not a Turkey

R & B singer, Toni Braxton, was recently eliminated from the ABC television show "Dancing With the Stars". Also making waves in recent weeks, is reported rumors the Toni Braxton has undergone cosmetic surgery.

OK! Magazine recently reported that the star had to have breast implants removed due to scar tissue. People magazine quoted Toni Braxton saying, "Parts of me are 41 and party of me are 20..[I will undergo] nothing else...I don't want to be a turkey, stuffed and plucked and baked". If Ms. Braxton had breast implants, perhaps she had them removed due to capsular contracture, which is a natural envelope of scar tissue that can form around medical devices implanted within the human body. This can sometimes infrequently warp the appearance of the implant/breast. In addition to patients who undergo breast augmentation, capsule formation can occur in people who receive artificial joints or have pacemakers inserted into their body.
According to InYourFace.com, another rumor has surfaced that Toni Braxton has had a rhinoplasty. It is true that her nose looks different from the way it did a number of years ago, but I cannot say for certain whether or not Toni Braxton has undergone any cosmetic procedure. One thing is for certain: at 41 years old the
R & B songstress still looks great!

The Past, Present & Future of Breast Implants

Dr Jennifer Walden discusses the future of breast implants, fat injections and soft tissue fillers in the breasts. Skin firming creams like Rodial and Mamma Mio Boob tube are also covered as well as external breast enhancing devices like Brava.

read more | digg story

This is taken from article that I wrote for Makemeheal.com that talks about the history of silicone and saline breast implants as well as the future of breast augmentation, including anatomic shaped highly cohesive gel implants that are yet to be approved by the FDA. As I mention, these implants are widely available in Europe and have high rates of patient satisfaction. These teardrop shaped (often called "gummy bear") implants are textured and contain a highly crosslinked form of silicone to minimize the possibility of migration as well as upper pole collapse and folds in the implant shell.  There are a matrix of different implants to choose from with varying width, height, and projection for the best patient fit, and are called Contour Profile Gel implants if by Mentor or Style 410 implants if made by Allergan Corporation.  One of the only potential drawbacks is that they are a bit firmer, and don't lateralize like normal breast tissue does when you lie down. (see the above  photos of Sarah with a style 410 implant on her chest on the left and a smooth round responsive gel implant on her chest on the right on the couch in our office). Beyoncé: Bootylicious Diva

Beyoncé Knowles is known not only known for her soulful voice, but for her "bootylicious" body. Today, People magazine reported that Beyoncé needed to gain 15 lbs. for her upcoming role as Etta James in
Cadillac Records. This is not the first time that the songstress' body has been in the news.

Beyoncé's appearance has changed since her debut with the group Destiny's Child. Though nothing can be confirmed, Star Plastic Surgery rumored that the celebrity may have undergone a rhinoplasty, to refine the tip and bridge of her nose, and possibly had a breast augmentation. MakeMeHeal has also commented on whether or not the star has had liposuction to give her tummy a firm, and more chiseled appearance. It may be unlikely that Beyoncé has had liposuction, as she is young, and has already proved, through various movie roles, that she is a pro at sculpting her body. Keep up the good work, Beyoncé! Look for Beyoncé's new movie release, Cadillac Records, later this year.
